Your adventure begins in Berthier-sur-Mer, where the fresh breeze of the St. Lawrence River sets the tone for the day. As you board the boat, take a moment to admire the stunning views—the vast river and the silhouette of the mountains in the distance.

During the crossing to Grosse Île, one of the Lachance captains will share stories of life on the island in days gone by, giving you a taste of the rich history you're about to explore.

Upon arrival, Parks Canada guides will welcome you and lead the way. Your first stop is the Third-Class Hotel, where you can leave your lunch and personal belongings so you can enjoy the tour hands-free. This is also where you’ll find a dining hall, and if the weather is nice, several picnic tables and grassy areas offer the perfect spot to relax outdoors.

Your visit is divided into three main parts, organized by your guide:

  1. A scenic train ride to explore the eastern side of the island.

  2. A tour of the disinfection building, where immigrants arriving in Canada were once processed.

  3. A visit to the First-Class Hotel, the Celtic Cross, and the Irish Memorial Cemetery, deeply moving sites that reflect the island's poignant past.

The guides will take you through both the tragedy of 1837, when typhus devastated thousands of immigrants, and the many other chapters that have shaped Grosse Île over time. Along the way, interpretive panels will enhance your understanding of the island’s role in the fight against infectious diseases and its place in global and Canadian history.

Back in Berthier-sur-Mer, don’t forget to stop by the souvenir shop at the Parc Fluvial. It’s the perfect place to discover local artisan products and bring home a special memory from your visit.
